DESCRIPTION:At any given time\, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music\, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 36 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But his forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft.  \nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. That’s real life.”  \nLauderdale would know: He’s been a vital part of the country music ecosystem since 1991\, when he released his debut album and began penning songs for an impressively long roster of country music greats. “When I was a teenager wanting to be a bluegrass banjo player\, I never would have imagined that I would get to work with people like Ralph Stanley and Robert Hunter and George Jones and Elvis Costello and John Oates\,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.”  \nFrom rollicking guitar riffs on “That Kind of Life (That Kind of Day)” to the slow\, sweet harmonies of “I’ll Keep My Heart Open For You\,” Game Changer shows off Lauderdale’s ingenuity as a singer\, songwriter\, and producer—while reestablishing him as one of Americana’s most steadfast champions. “Country music is constantly evolving\, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for steel guitar and a Telecaster\,” he says. “I have done my job on this record if people who love classic country feel like they can put it on\, or have it in their collection\, and it would fit right in.”  \nRespecting the past doesn’t mean he’s not breaking new ground. “We’re All We’ve Got\,” a co-write with Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris\, offers a timely message about healing torn relationships at home and across the world. DESCRIPTION:2x GRAMMY winning legend\, Blues Hall of Famer\, six-time Grammy nominee\, and 14-time Blues Music Award winner\, with cameo in the Netflix original Dolemite Is My Name starring Eddie Murphy\, and a recent Autobiography  \nDuring his renowned stage show Bobby Rush frequently jumps high into the air\, arms spread and legs tucked\, only to land gracefully and return without a hitch to his dazzling routine. It’s a move you might expect at a contemporary R&B show\, but it’s downright shocking when you realize that Rush is in his late 80s. \n“I never thought I would be here this long\,” says Rush. “I was 83 years old before I won a Grammy\, but it’s better late than never. I laugh about it\, but I’m so blessed and I surely never thought I’d be making a living doing what I’m doing. I’m not just an old guy on my way out.” \nHardly. Rush’s busy schedule includes headlining European festivals with his band and solo programs at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center\, and he just recorded an album of brand new material\, All My Love For You\, coming out via his own label Deep Rush Records in collaboration with Nashville-based Thirty Tigers. Over the last several years he’s won a second Grammy\, re-recorded his 1971 hit Chicken Heads together with his old friend Buddy Guy and young blues star Christone “Kingfish” Ingram\, and written a critically acclaimed autobiography\, I Ain’t Studdin’ You: My American Blues Story. \nThat story began in rural Homer/Haynesville\, Louisiana\, where Rush—born Emmett Ellis\, Jr.—grew up on his family’s farm picking cotton\, tending to mules and chickens\, and living in a home without electricity nor indoor plumbing. He built his first guitar on the side of the family’s house out of broom wire\, nails\, bottles and bricks. \nThe blues\, Rush recalls\, provided “an escape from the cotton fields. You’d go out on Saturday night to the juke joints\, but then on Monday morning you’d go back into the cotton fields to work for your bossman.” \nHe left behind farm work to perform on the road with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels\, and as “Bobby Rush”—a name he took on out of respect to his father\, a minister—he toured the jukes and clubs of Louisiana\, Arkansas and Mississippi before settling in Chicago in the 1950s. Sometimes playful\, sometimes poignant\, October Ember is comprised of Jennifer Dutiel and Kevin Holland\, a multi-instrumentalist couple with a penchant for the quirky and the beautiful. They will be joined by the madly talented Troy Kunkler on drums. A cross-pollination of folk\, indie lounge\, Euro Cafe\, art pop\, and punk cabaret\, their exploration of odd time signatures\, neo-minimalist pulses\, ethereal timbres\, and vast dynamic spectra transmutes ontology into sound. With the wisps of softened reeds\, dreamy guitars\, and intricate percussion\, they paint an aural tapestry for the film of existence.   \nOctober Ember formed in 2017 and launched their first self-titled EP that same year. They were featured on the Emmy-award winning television show Broad & High after their 2019 Tiny Desk Contest video submission for the song “Waves” attracted the attention of the show’s producers. They release new music regularly and perform frequently across central Ohio. A powerful lyricist whose songs of  compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster child for  intersectionality\,” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation called Matthews’s gift “a reminder of what  beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” She is made for these times and\, with the release of  her new\, hope-fueled\, love-filled social justice album Changemakers\, Matthews hopes to take her  place alongside some of her heroes in the world of social-justice music like Sweet Honey in the Rock  and Holly Near. Of Matthews\, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says\, “By wrapping honest  emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart  and a strong voice\, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.”   \nMatthews began performing in 2010 but cemented her acclaim at Lincoln Center as the 2017 NewSong  Music and Performance Competition grand prize winner. That year she also released two new projects  — her album of thoughtful songs on love and life called The Imagineers\, and her EP called Battle Hymn   \nfor an Army of Lovers\, which tackles social justice themes. Matthews also won the People’s Music  Network’s Social Justice Songs contest at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance. Loyal fans quickly  followed as Matthews racked up performances at large music festivals and prestigious venues across  the country including the Sundance Film Festival\, Kerrville Folk Festival\, and locally at venues like The  Birchmere\, The Hamilton\, Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center\, and Jammin’ Java. In her TedTalk  about difficult conversations called “Sing\, Don’t Shout — An Alternative Approach” Matthews spoke  about being born and raised in a small town in southeastern North Carolina by an A.M.E. preacher\, and  how she witnessed the power of music from an early age. A former drum major and classically trained  clarinetist turned folk singer\, Matthews is using her voice to answer Dr. Martin Luther King’s call to be  “a drum major for justice.”   \n“I believe in hope\,” Matthews said. “As a social-justice songwriter\, it is my duty to keep breathing that  hope and encouragement into the people who listen to my music.” And\, from the title track to the last  track\, Changemakers does just that all while tackling some heavy topics like immigration\, the opioid  crisis\, Black Lives Matter\, and gun safety to name a few. “Ani DiFranco said\, “People used to make  records as in a record of an event\,”” said Matthews\, “so I hope that these songs will serve as a time  capsule\, a record of the events of the last four years and what it was like to live through them.” Crys  Matthews’s thoughtful\, realistic\, and emotional songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind  us why music indeed soothes the soul.   \nSETH GLIER  \nThe earth speaks to us in a myriad of ways — through ice cores\, through uplift and erosion\, through tree rings — languages we have the potential to restore our literacy in. Reconnecting with these quiet messages has set Seth Glier\, an avid mushroom forager and a Grammy-nominated artist from Western Massachusetts\, on a path of channeling nature’s longing for communion with humanity into song. We bring people together with artists to share their experiences\, emotions\, and ideas\, and collectively turn those conversations into art. Then\, we amplify their stories to the broader community by sharing their songs\, videos and artwork on local radio\, streaming platforms and in public spaces to change hearts\, minds and start meaningful conversations. DESCRIPTION:“I try to take things I love and use them in a new way\,” said triple Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Peter Case of his 16th solo album Doctor Moan. Case brings his considerable songwriting ability to an 11-song collection\, largely performed on piano\, including his first solo recorded instrumental. Released by Sunset Blvd Records on March 31\, Case’s piano-based songs are emotionally\, sonically and stylistically rich. \nAs a founding member of the early punk era trio The Nerves\, in 1977 Case toured the nation sharing bills with the Ramones\, Mink DeVille\, Pere Ubu\, and Devo. The Nerves single “Hanging on the Telephone\,” was covered by Blondie. In 1979\, Case formed the Plimsouls\, a record-breaking live act in California\, recording albums for Planet/Elektra and Geffen. Their independent single\, “A Million Miles Away\,” entered the Billboard charts and remains a garage rock standard\, performed by bands around the world. The band performed in the cult classic film Valley Girl and the Nerves and Plimsouls timeless teenage rock ‘n’ roll continues to appeal to fans of each new generation. \nAfter the Plimsouls\, Case rediscovered his musical roots on his self-titled solo debut\, produced by T Bone Burnett. The New York Times declared Peter Case the best album of 1986. It earned a five-star Rolling Stone review and a Grammy nomination. As one of the first songwriters of his generation to turn from rock music toward an acoustic sound\, Case also helped usher in what became known as Americana music. \n  \nBen de la Cour opens the show… \n \nThere are singer songwriters\, and there are troubadours. Singer songwriters are sensitive\, polished souls\, sharing their journal entries with the world\, whereas troubadours do their best just to stay out of jail. In the wake of Ben de la Cour’s astonishing new record\, Shadow Land\, you can add his name to the top of the list of younger troubadours to whom this ever so occasionally poisoned chalice is being passed. \nShadow Land shimmers. Its both terrifying and soothing\, suffused with honesty\, craft and a rare soul baring fearlessness but with enough surprises to keep the listener guessing. It gets down and dirty with electric guitar but also features Bens diffident fingerpicking in quieter moments. Ultimately\, it is a darkly beautiful meditation on what it means to be human. Tom is a virtuoso player of the Chapman Stick\, a guitar/bass hybrid tapping instrument invented in California by Emmett Chapman. Tom is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music in Boston. \nTokyo-born Hideyo Moriya began his guitar journey with surf music and British rock\, before relocating to Boston to study at Berklee. Hideyo is currently on hiatus from touring and lives in Chiba Japan. Lams\, Richards and Moriya felt the call to push themselves to the limit by enrolling in Robert Fripp’s challenging Guitar Craft courses\, where they first met in 1987. They went on to tour together as part of Fripp’s League of Crafty Guitarists\, before forming the California Guitar Trio in Los Angeles four years later. \nRecently\, the trio expanded its collaborative possibilities by working within a six-guitar format with the Montreal Guitar Trio. Marion Meadows first hit the airwaves in 1991 with “For Lovers Only”\, his first RCA release and a huge success\, and was followed by his groundbreaking “Keep it Right There” album. He also became a well-known sideman\, recording or performing over the years with Brook Benton\, Eartha Kitt\, The Temptations\, Michael Bolton\, Angela Bofill\, Bob Baldwin\, Chuck Loeb\, John Lee\, among many others.  \nMeadows came a staple of the contemporary jazz format with his subsequent recordings\, and most recently Soul Traveler\, the first installment of his Soul Trilogy which now showcases his current release\, Soul City” on the New York-based Shanachie Label. Meadows is a semi-pro cyclist\, graphic artist and designer and received a doctorate from Wilberforce University in 2016. \nThe Urban Jazz Coalition (UJC) has been one of the hottest live performance ensembles on the contemporary jazz scene for some time now and 2022 marks the celebration of this groundbreaking band’s 27th Anniversary as a performing group! DESCRIPTION:Sometimes the apple falls far from the tree. Even without Comhaltas\, conservatories\, or competitions\, 3 musicians in Central Ohio who had come to love Celtic music came together to form Fialla. Their abilities to pick up traditional instruments and play them with grace seemed to be steeped in their DNA. All multi-instrumentalists\, and one a dancer\, they present Celtic music so faithfully one thinks they hear the accents of the old country. Finding their footing in the local scene\, including performing at the Dublin Irish Festival\, the band has grown to be a first-class representative of Celtic music. Their selection of songs and tunes and the way they arrange the pieces has a freshness devoid of the usual stigma facing up-and-coming artists. Fialla finds songs that intrigue them\, and plays with them until they make them their own. Based in Columbus\, Ohio\, she regularly performs with groups such as the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and her own Rachel Azbell Quintet\, performing at notable venues including Natalie’s – Grandview\, the Ginger Rabbit\, Caffè Vivace and more. Beyond her musical pursuits\, Rachel is deeply engaged in nonprofit work\, currently serving as the Education Program Manager at the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus and teaching jazz and commercial voice at Otterbein University and the University of Cincinnati-Conservatory of Music. In 2021\, Rachel earned her Master’s of Music degree in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas. During her time there\, she served as a teaching fellow\, where she led the distinguished West End vocal jazz ensemble\, and earned consecutive Downbeat Student Jazz Awards in 2021 and 2022.  \n \nMeg Paulsen is a Columbus\, Ohio-based singer-songwriter with a penchant for percussive sensuality. Deeply influenced by Brazilian music of the 1960s\, she feels most at home singing jazz\, bossa nova\, and related genres. In addition to performing and collaborating with other local artists and musicians\, she is currently working on her debut EP\, Garage Meats.  \n \nSydney McSweeney is a powerhouse vocalist and recording artist\, native to Columbus\, Ohio. Her enchanting fusion of jazz\, gospel\, and pop vocal stylings are undeniably one of a kind.  \nHaving earned her stripes as one of the country’s emerging artists\, Sydney’s dynamic performances with countless symphonies across America\, The Columbus Jazz Orchestra\, and Maestro Byron Stripling have left audiences speechless-described as “stunningly beautiful” and drawing standing ovations across the country.  \nWhether on stage or in the studio\, Sydney infuses each performance with a unique and soulful energy. Her “one of a kind” approach and thoughtful treatment of song create an experience you won’t soon forget. \n \nJasmine Spitzer\, a vocalist and 3rd generation educator hailing from Minot\, North Dakota\, found her musical passion in the diverse genres of jazz\, blues\, pop\, funk\, and soul. DESCRIPTION:Marcy Mays and Sue Harshe are an institution within the Columbus music scene. They are co-founders of the band Scrawl\, who between 1985 and 1998 released six albums and an EP. They toured endlessly\, both in the US and Europe with the Meat Puppets\, Afghan Whigs\, Superchunk\, the Wedding Present\, Shellac\, Wilco\, Mike Watt\, Jon Spencer Blue’s Explosion\, and Spoon\, to name a few. They performed at Lollapalooza\, the Reading Festival\, and two All Tomorrow’s Parties.  \nScrawl started out on the local label\, No Other Records\, who put out their debut album\, Plus Also Too\, but the band soon signed with Rough Trade\, recording two albums (He’s Drunk and Smallmouth) until the label went bankrupt\, sending the band scurrying to New York to bid on its master tapes. A one-off recording with Chicago’s Feel Good All Over Records produced the anger-fueled Bloodsucker and association with Steve Albini\, who then recorded Velvet Hammer for the Simple Machines label and Travel On\, Rider (along with Memphis producer Jeff Powell) for Elektra. One more album\, Nature Film was released on Elektra before the label and band parted ways. \n“Through the rise and fall of American indie rock\, the years of hardcore and hair metal\, college radio and Nirvana\, Oasis and No Depression and Riot Grrrl\, from the early 1980s to the Y2K bug\, the Columbus\, Ohio trio were making stripped-down rock music that performed—sadly\, angrily\, beautifully\, roughly\, then elegantly— just the opposite of what we usually expect rock music to do. Hoodoo began as a side project for several seasoned veterans of the Columbus music scene who wanted an outlet to play Funk and Rhythm and Blues with a horn section. Primarily a cover band\, Hoodoo is known for curating a unique set list while giving each song their own original treatment. The players effectively turn soul songs into standards which they deconstruct on the fly\, improvising new arrangements in front of the crowd\, and introducing audiences to funky\, unfamiliar gems that quickly become crowd favorites. Most of the group is still made up of the original members but new blood has been introduced over the years. At any given show the line-up may change with only the very best players in the city subbing in. DESCRIPTION:DAVE HAUSE’S SONGS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ROOTED IN TANGIBLE REALITY—OF EMOTION\, OF ENVIRONMENT\, OF CIRCUMSTANCE.  \nSince releasing his debut album\, Resolutions\, in 2011\, the Philadelphia-born songwriter has poured his whole heart\, soul and life into his music. That’s no different on Drive It Like It’s Stolen\, his sixth full-length. Its 10 songs overflow with Hause’s trademark urgency and passion\, shimmering with a truth that reflects the harsh realities of life in this day and age\, as well the intermittent jolts of joy that punctuate it. After all\, his songs have always detailed his own personal traumas and triumphs within the setting of an unforgiving capitalist backdrop\, tethering those personal experiences to ineluctable external forces. 2013’s second album\, Devour\, for example\, was a response to his divorce from his first wife\, while 2019’s Kick saw him tackle hope\, depression\, global warming and a crumbling American democracy with the news that he was to become a father. Most recently\, on 2021’s Blood Harmony\, Hause wrote and sang about the positive impact of having twins\, and of the joy and excitement of being able to be at home with them for the first couple of years of the pandemic.  \n Drive It Like It’s Stolen is just as earnest and heartfelt\, raw and real as anything he’s ever written before. Yet there’s also a subtle yet significant difference—here he’s delving into a more fictional type of storytelling to create what he terms “post-apocalyptic Americana.” That’s clear from the title of this album’s haunting and ominous opening song\, “Cheap Seats (New Year’s Day\, NYC\, 2042)”. Set two decades in the future\, it’s obviously not about anything that’s actually happened\, but is still very much inspired by life. At the start of 2022\, Hause was in a good place. He’d changed his diet and had maintained a strenuous workout regimen resulting in improved physical and mental health. Feeling great\, he’d decided to go off Lexapro and left to go out on the Blood Harmony band touring.  \n “I was feeling great\,” he recalls. “I came back to work\, didn’t have my meds. But then I’m on tour\, I’m not working out\, I’m not eating that way anymore. And I’m really faced with the American city\, the American experiment post-pandemic. We’re going places and being like\, ‘Oh\, my God\, this is what Portland and San Francisco and Los Angeles look like.’ And it looked terrifying. Whenever I went anywhere\, I felt like I was watching the prequel to 12 Monkeys\, except I was also living it and just wondering what the fuck was going on. The tour was doing well\, but it just felt like my mental health was falling down stairs. A few months later\, when we were finishing the tour\, we heard stories that people were siphoning gas out of tour buses. So\, a lot of the record was kind of born of and trying to wrestle with that.” \n To that extent\, the future dystopia of “Cheap Seats” is very real—a vivid depiction of a society on the verge of collapse based on Hause’s experience as a touring musician and then filtered through his imagination. If “Cheap Seats” sets the tone with its dream of escape from a ravaged New York City\, then song “Pedal Down” starts that road trip. It’s a gloomy\, glowering\, dark early morning ride through desolate\, post-apocalyptic streets\, whose atmosphere really places you inside that car. A moody and monochrome song full of portent and hope in equal measure\, it’s both a literal journey—captured by the album’s striking cover\, which replicates the view of one of his twins in the back seat as the family drives away—and a metaphorical exploration of Hause’s fears and anxiety of being a parent in modern day America. ‘But we lead our lambs to slaughter\,” he sings. ‘It’s profit\, boot straps\, and guns/Every god needs a sacrifice/Honey\, what have we done?’ On one level it’s a simple question directed at his wife about having kids. On another\, it’s tackling the whole American system.  \n“Having children sounds like a great idea\,” he explains\, “and then you realize that they’re grist for the mill. They’re grist to be sold to\, they’re to be exploited\, and they’re potentially fodder for our passion for guns. If your god in America is the gun\, the idea that we must have these guns\, then gods need sacrifices and our children are those sacrifices. And you wonder\, ‘Did we bring children in this world to sacrifice them to the various American gods?’ That’s another thing we’re kind of grieving. We’re all complicit in this\, and we’re all potentially going to have to pay.”\n\nThe disturbing\, apocalyptic quasi-reality of the album’s lyrics is matched and amplified by the music. Written by Hause with his younger brother Tim\, Drive It Like It’s Stolen—just like the three that preceded it\, as well as Tim’s 2022 debut full-length—is the distinct next phase of their creative partnership. The third release on the brothers’ own Blood Harmony record label\, it shakes up expectations while at the same time building off the sound and reputation Hause has established for himself over the past decade or so. “Damn Personal”\, for example\, is a boisterous blue collar anthem about lost friends that’s charged with electric emotion\, while the uplifting\, Petty-esque “Hazard Lights” ruminates on Hause’s sobriety and the temptation that exists when he’s around friends who still imbibe. Yet though there’s a specificity to those lyrics\, they’re easily applicable to other situations\, too. \n“That feeling of having the hazard lights on\,” says Hause\, “it’s just uncertainty. I’m kind of just pulled over here—I don’t know where I’m going\, I know where I’ve been\, the hazard lights are blinking\, so please don’t hit me because I’ve got to figure out what to do next.”  \nElsewhere\, there’s “chainsaweyes” and “lashingout”\, two very halves of the same whole that once again merge personal anxieties with universal horrors. Both ask important questions about identity and parenthood and responsibility and the difficulties of raising children in America. The former is backed by dramatic strings that emphasize the importance of the subject matter\, while the latter begins as a beautifully poignant acoustic tune before descending into a marvelously unexpected piano breakdown that wouldn’t be out of place in a saloon sometime in the 1800s. Don’t be deceived by what Hause calls the “sugar” of that part\, though—there’s still an important message underpinning it. \n“Both those songs are trying to assess that angry\, always devouring\, youthful\, testosterone-fueled American boy thing\,” explains Hause. “Raising boys in America\, you don’t want to fall on the wrong side of history with that. In “lashingout”\, that person who sings ‘I want to be God for a day’ at the end could be a school shooter. That wish could be something that would prompt someone to do something terrible. Why would you want that power? You could really hurt people. But here’s the thing—we all feel like lashing out like that at points. But what is it that’s prompting this feeling that you want to change everything\, and do you have it right? Are you righteous in that anger of wanting to lash out?” \n Drive It Like It’s Stolen was engineered and mixed by David Axelrod\, and—like Blood Harmony—produced by Will Hoge and recorded at Santi Sound in Nashville\, though with a different set of musicians than that album’s all-star cast. Yet that’s not to the record’s detriment at all. On penultimate song “Tarnish”\, a song about both a life lived and one still being lived—past and present coalescing in a beautiful mesh of wistful self-reflection\, Hause sings ‘I never got a golden record/I guess the melodies were wrong.’ The performance and production of not just that song\, but this whole record\, proves that sentiment entirely wrong. It’s followed by “The Vulture”\, a song that harks back to the defiance that dominated Kick but which is recast with his children in mind. It feels\, too\, like the cementing of the thematic shift he’s making on this record. These songs may still be for Hause\, but they’re increasingly less about him. \n“My life is getting increasingly less interesting\,” he smiles. “And that’s by design. You want to be steady\, you want to be at a baseball practice or taking your kids to gymnastics or whatever it is. You don’t want to necessarily be staring into the abyss all the time and trying to determine your existential weight. I don’t want my life to become fodder for songs—I want my creativity to be the fodder for songs.” \nWith this particular car ride\, then\, Hause is en route to a whole new world. DESCRIPTION:The Sea The Sea is a Nashville based indie folk-pop duo featuring what Bob Boilen (NPR’s All Songs Considered) calls “excellent harmonies” & Huffington Post calls\, “Two of the loveliest male-female voices you might ever hear this or any other year.” The group’s 2020 release\, Stumbling Home\, dubbed “otherworldly” by Rolling Stone marks the duo’s third full-length album\, and the duo’s first primary recording / engineering credits on one of their albums\, as well as that of co-producers—teaming up with recent Grammy and Tony award winner Todd Sickafoose (Hadestown\, Anais Mitchell\, Ani DiFranco\, Andrew Bird).
