SUMMARY:Melodies for a Miracle: A Benefit Concert for Dre Peace
DESCRIPTION:Join hosts Paisha Thomas\, Jamalia Jackson and Talisha Holmes along with a full stage of musicians\, poets and artists to celebrate and raise funds on behalf of friend and fellow musician\, Dre Peace. \nA favorite on Natalie’s stages and in the Columbus music community\, Dre Peace is in kidney failure and facing life altering changes and extraordinary medical expenses. In 2020\, Dre was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia – a rare and serious condition where the body stops producing red blood cells\, making him more prone to illness. He’s been hospitalized multiple times since and is now on dialysis and in dire need of a new kidney (blood type A+). 100% of the proceeds of this show will go to Dre for mounting medical bills and living expenses while hospitalized. \n\n\nDre Peace made his live debut in church choir at age 5. After landing a manager\, he traveled the country as a singer\, performing in every state except Alaska and Hawaii. At age 10\, he signed with an agency\, which led to a contract with Disney and an appearance on Broadway\, where he played young Simba in a production of “The Lion King” at New Amsterdam Theatre. Over the years\, he’s performed in front of a range of dignitaries\, including Senators and former presidents. He has also performed as a part of the dynamic duo known as The Tryangles for about 10 years\, before recently embarking upon his highly anticipated solo career. DESCRIPTION:The Trad Nua Celtic Series at Natalie’s is hosted by acclaimed Irish musicians Randy Clepper and Mick Broderick. The series presents a variety of traditional Irish and Celtic acts often juxtaposing old styles with new influences\, local and international artists\, and featuring traditional instruments. Sponsored by the Dublin Irish Celebration. \nWe’re pleased to host Gerry O’Connor – regarded as one of the great fiddle players of his generation. He grew up in Dundalk\, County Louth\, where he was surrounded by a musical family. He took fiddle lessons from his mother\, the great fiddle teacher\, Rose O’Connor. \nGerry won numerous All Ireland titles between 1967 and 1973. He played with John Joe Gardiner in the 1970’s which greatly formed his style; focusing on the fluid\, ornamented\, lyrical fiddling of the great Sligo masters. Gerry’s background in dance provides the influence for his vibrant dance music.  \nGerry has played and recorded with highly regarded groups including Lá Lúgh\, Skylark\, on the Claddagh label. Toured and recorded with members of legendary Irish groups including Planxty\, The Bothy Band\, De Dannan\, Boys of the Lough and The Chieftains. Lá Lúgh’s album\, Brighid’s Kiss was voted album of the year 1996 by Irish Music Magazine\, his solo album\, Journeyman\, was in the top five albums of 2004 by the Irish Times and was counted as a significant milestone recording of the music of the Oriel region of South Ulster. With Nuala Kennedy\, Martin Quinn and Gilles le Bigot\, Gerry released the album Oirialla making the debut at the 2012 Celtic Colours Festival in Cape Breton\, Canada.  \nIn 2018 Gerry was awarded Ceannródai\, the prestigious Bardic Award by Comhaltas for his valued contributions to the Traditional Arts. Also in 2018 he launched is second solo album\, Last Night’s Joy\, and published The Rose in the Gap-Dance Music for Oriel from the Donnellan Collection.  \nGerry is currently touring and has recorded six albums with the celebrated Irish-Canadian group The Irish Rovers.  \nPlaying along with Gerry – Central-Ohio-based Randy Clepper is an in-demand player of the Irish bouzouki\, also tenor banjo\, fingerstyle guitar\, and hammered dulcimer\, who performs with many artists including John Sherman\, Mick Broderick and Bella Issakova. \nRick and Hillary Wagner and Jim’s Red Pants. This duo performs historic American fiddle tunes\, Irish\, Scottish\, and English country dance music as well as original and contemporary folk music on fiddle\, bouzouki\, tenor guitar\, mandolins\, tenor and 5 string banjo\, flute and whistle\, vocals\, piano\, and more. They are located in Dayton\, Ohio and perform at historical events\, libraries\, weddings\, house concerts\, municipal concerts\, pretty much anywhere! DESCRIPTION:Natalie’s is thrilled to welcome local legend Willie Phoenix for his CD Release Party – Save the Angels!\nSpecial Guest Colin Gawel CG2 opens the show for a night you won’t want to miss. \nWhether he’s playing haunting blues\, straight forward rock\, garage band noise or psychedelic fusion – Willie Phoenix delivers. Willie’s career has spanned decades – and so has his passion – never stopping\, never failing to deliver jaw-dropping performances with an undeniable edge. \nBorn in Camden Alabama\, Willie says he entered the world “wrapped in a burning southern flag” – referencing his love for the blues. Growing up\, he listened to all of the greats. They were all there on the 78/45 rpm records played on his family’s Magnavox record player:  Muddy Waters\, Lightening Hopkins\, Howling Wolf\, John Lee Hooker and country greats Hank Williams\, Buck Owens and Jerry Reed. Willie remembers thinking the guitars\, harmonicas and voices possessed the same echoing\, lonely sound as the midnight trains that rumbled past his Marion\, Ohio home. It was there\, in Marion\,  where he grew up\, went to school and cut his teeth on early British invasion blues and rock n’ roll. \nWillie has never looked back. He learned to play the blues from his father\, bluesman Willie James Creagh Sr. who played with big names like Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson II (Willie’s godfather).  Willie says\, “I had a certain knack for writing songs. I started playing guitar\, grabbed a few of my mates\, formed a band and made a lot of wonderful noise.” Willie has worked clubs and concert halls from Toronto Canada straight to the west coast neon lights of Hollywood. He’s performed with many greats\, including Muddy Waters\, BB King\, rock n’ roll’s Ramones and The Talking Heads – to name only a few. \nA prolific songwriter\, Willie has released more albums than can be mentioned – but most recently he’s released Magic in the Dark (2022)\, four albums in 2021 (Heavy Bubblegum\, 3 Chords Maybe 4\, Poster Noise\, Bomb Shelter 13).  Other recent works include This Ain’t 1968 (2020)\, Backstage Rain (2019)\, Garage Blues Band (2017)\, Blues My Soul (2016) and Captain Psychedelic (2015)\, all released through 1978 Records. \nThough he’s a very humble guy\, if you’re lucky you might get Willie to tell you about how the City of Columbus honored “the legendary rock god Willie Phoenix” by renaming 16th and High Street “Willie Phoenix Way” (October\, 2020) or about being inducted into the 2022 Columbus Blues Alliance Hall of Fame (October 2022). \nWhen not on the road\, Willie’s usually cutting sides at Eastman Studios. You can probably find Willie and his band (Steven Day Carter on drums and Chuck Birchfield on bass) performing into the wee hours of the morning somewhere in town or at Eldorado’s – their favorite underground juke joint in the Graceland district of Columbus. \nWillie once told a friend\, “Rock n’ roll has saved me from the blues of silence.” Long live rock n’ roll! \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. Jorma Kaukonen’s repertoire goes far beyond his involvement creating psychedelic rock; he is a music legend and one of the finest singer-songwriters in music. \nBut performance and recording are only part of the story. As the leading practitioner and teacher of fingerstyle guitar\, Jorma and his wife Vanessa Lillian operate one of the world’s most unique centers for the study of guitar and other instruments. Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch Guitar Camp is located on 125 acres of fields\, woods\, hills\, and streams in the Appalachian foothills of \nSoutheastern Ohio. Since it opened in 1998\, thousands of musicians whose skills range from basic to highly accomplished gather for weekends of master instruction offered by Jorma and other instructors who are leaders in their musical fields. \nAs Jorma’s former road manager and the only manager of his Fur Peach Ranch Guitar Camp\, John Hurlbut and Jorma have been friends since 1984\, and recently celebrated the release of their album The River Flows. Being close friends and neighbors allowed them to do a lot of picking and Jorma loves to step out of the spotlight to provide lead flourishes while backing up John’s signature vocal and rhythm guitar interpretations.  \nIn 2019 St. Martin’s Press published Jorma‘s autobiography\, Been So Long: My Life and Music\, written to express his life both in and out of the music world. DESCRIPTION:At any given time\, you’re likely to find Jim Lauderdale making music\, whether he’s laying down a new track in the studio or working through a spontaneous melody at his home in Nashville. And if he’s not actively crafting new music\, he’s certainly thinking about it. “It’s a constant challenge to try to keep making better and better records\, write better and better songs. I still always feel like I’m a developing artist\,” he says. This may be a surprising sentiment from a man who’s won two Grammys\, released 36 full-length albums\, and taken home the Americana Music Association’s coveted Wagonmaster Award. But his forthcoming album Game Changer is convincing evidence that the North Carolina native is only continuing to hone his craft.  \nOperating under his own label\, Sky Crunch Records\, for the first time since 2016\, Lauderdale recorded Game Changer at the renowned Blackbird Studios in Nashville\, co-producing the release with Jay Weaver and pulling from songs he’d written over the last several years. “There’s a mixture on this record of uplifting songs and\, at the same time\, songs of heartbreak and despair—because that’s part of life as well\,” he says. “In the country song world especially\, that’s always been part of it. That’s real life.”  \nLauderdale would know: He’s been a vital part of the country music ecosystem since 1991\, when he released his debut album and began penning songs for an impressively long roster of country music greats. “When I was a teenager wanting to be a bluegrass banjo player\, I never would have imagined that I would get to work with people like Ralph Stanley and Robert Hunter and George Jones and Elvis Costello and John Oates\,” he muses. “Getting to work with them inspires me greatly to this day\, and I know it always will.”  \nFrom rollicking guitar riffs on “That Kind of Life (That Kind of Day)” to the slow\, sweet harmonies of “I’ll Keep My Heart Open For You\,” Game Changer shows off Lauderdale’s ingenuity as a singer\, songwriter\, and producer—while reestablishing him as one of Americana’s most steadfast champions. “Country music is constantly evolving\, but I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for steel guitar and a Telecaster\,” he says. “I have done my job on this record if people who love classic country feel like they can put it on\, or have it in their collection\, and it would fit right in.”  \nRespecting the past doesn’t mean he’s not breaking new ground. “We’re All We’ve Got\,” a co-write with Mary Gauthier and Jaimee Harris\, offers a timely message about healing torn relationships at home and across the world. And “Friends Again\,” a grinning number about rekindling a friendship\, is fresh and forward-looking. At every turn\, Lauderdale’s collaborative  \nspirit and genuine love for the creative process reveal themselves in thoughtful\, well-crafted songs sure to stand the test of time. “When everything works right\, it’s just magical to be able to hear them back\,” he says. “You feel\, at least for those three-and-a-half minutes\, like life makes sense.” \nFood & Bar: Our full food and drink menu will be available before and during the show. \n

DESCRIPTION:2x GRAMMY winning legend\, Blues Hall of Famer\, six-time Grammy nominee\, and 14-time Blues Music Award winner\, with cameo in the Netflix original Dolemite Is My Name starring Eddie Murphy\, and a recent Autobiography  \nDuring his renowned stage show Bobby Rush frequently jumps high into the air\, arms spread and legs tucked\, only to land gracefully and return without a hitch to his dazzling routine. It’s a move you might expect at a contemporary R&B show\, but it’s downright shocking when you realize that Rush is in his late 80s. \n“I never thought I would be here this long\,” says Rush. “I was 83 years old before I won a Grammy\, but it’s better late than never. I laugh about it\, but I’m so blessed and I surely never thought I’d be making a living doing what I’m doing. I’m not just an old guy on my way out.” \nHardly. Rush’s busy schedule includes headlining European festivals with his band and solo programs at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center\, and he just recorded an album of brand new material\, All My Love For You\, coming out via his own label Deep Rush Records in collaboration with Nashville-based Thirty Tigers. Over the last several years he’s won a second Grammy\, re-recorded his 1971 hit Chicken Heads together with his old friend Buddy Guy and young blues star Christone “Kingfish” Ingram\, and written a critically acclaimed autobiography\, I Ain’t Studdin’ You: My American Blues Story. \nThat story began in rural Homer/Haynesville\, Louisiana\, where Rush—born Emmett Ellis\, Jr.—grew up on his family’s farm picking cotton\, tending to mules and chickens\, and living in a home without electricity nor indoor plumbing. He built his first guitar on the side of the family’s house out of broom wire\, nails\, bottles and bricks. \nThe blues\, Rush recalls\, provided “an escape from the cotton fields. You’d go out on Saturday night to the juke joints\, but then on Monday morning you’d go back into the cotton fields to work for your bossman.” \nHe left behind farm work to perform on the road with the Rabbit Foot Minstrels\, and as “Bobby Rush”—a name he took on out of respect to his father\, a minister—he toured the jukes and clubs of Louisiana\, Arkansas and Mississippi before settling in Chicago in the 1950s.
