WE THE PEOPLE STAND – Celebrating the People and the Music of Sly and the Family Stone! This annual event at Natalie’s recognizes Sly’s birthday on March 13 and features national recording artists Urban Jazz Coalition along with vocalists Ron Jenkins, Tia Harris and Vicki Saunders. In true birthday fashion, there will be party favors, cupcakes, dance/costume prizes.
Even in the throes of the daunting political, racial and social upheaval of the 70s, the music of the times spoke to the American people. The Sly and the Family Stone band changed the American music landscape by bringing together people of different races, genders and beliefs. His music reflected his band. It was a blend of rock, soul, pop and funk. But most importantly, most of Sly Stone’s music had a very clear message – bring people together! Everyday People. Stand, It’s a Family Affair, You Can Make it if You Try, and more. Today’s times are calling for this same effort to bring people together. Despite our differences we must come together to help one another. From the LA fires to the floods in North Carolina, America stands strong because of its people.
