Gospel Soul Series: Ron Lyles

Hosted by Debra James Tucker

  • This event has passed.

Ron Lyles is certainly no stranger to the world of music and the arts. Ron was born in Columbus, OH to  parents, Pastors Ron Sr. and Mary Lyles. Coming from a musical family, Ron’s gifts almost seemed to be  inevitable. As a little boy Ron was known to be a singer and entertainer. He started singing at the age of  two years old. He would put on shows and concerts at family get-togethers not knowing this would  certainly follow him for the rest of his life. At the age of 5, Ron was playing the drums for his first group.  At the age of 7, Ron had his first solo “Go Tell It on the Mountain” in his aunt’s church Christmas play.  From there, Ron began to sing with his family group “The Lyles Family”. The Family traveled all over  Columbus and abroad singing for many churches, conferences, and banquets. Being known mainly as a  singer, it wasn’t until high school when Ron’s music teacher discovered there was more versatility there.  Ron joined the Independence High School “Singing 76ers” and starred in their Cabaret shows all four  years of his high school tenure. Cabarets were musicals that involved singing and acting. They covered  musicals such as “Broadway”, “Disney”, “Les Miserables”, “Fame”, “American Bandstand”, “Motown”,  and many more. Ron’s greatest accomplishment with the Singing 76ers, was traveling/performing at  Universal Studios and Disney World in Orlando. The group won first place gold in their performance  category back to back years in 2002 and 2003.

In 2002 Ron formed a group with his close friend Oscar J. Stone called “The Supreme Voices”. In 2004  after an in depth discussion with Oscar, they agreed to change the group name to “Men of Gods Heart”.  Their group defining moment came in Philadelphia, PA; when the group won the Allstate “Battle of the  Bands”, and were afforded the opportunity to sing at The Allstate Gospel Superfest in Memphis, TN.

Since then, they have traveled in and out of the country and sang for crowds ranging from 80 to 8,000  plus. They have performed with artists such as: Fred Hammond, Kim Burrell, Marvin Sapp, Donnie  McClurkin, Canton Jones, J.J. Hairston & Youthful Praise, Ricky Dillard & New G, Bishop Rance Allen,  Jonathan Nelson, and Jason Nelson to name a few of many. Ron has had many great opportunities; but his  biggest break came August 2013, when he performed with his brothers “MGH” on BET’s Bobby Jones  Gospel singing their chart song “Daybreak”. In 2015, Ron was awarded The Kingdom Image Award for  “Best Male Vocalist” in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. 2017 was a big musical year for MGH . The  group hit the Billboard charts and peaked out at #6, in the top 10 for album sales. Later that year, MGH  was nominated for a Stellar Award for “Quartet of the Year”. Personally, Ron has written songs on two  Stellar Award Nominated projects: his cousin, The Late Pastor Shawn Jones & The Believers’ “Victory”  album (2016). The 2nd project being The “Men of God’s Heart” self titled album (2017). Ron has been  featured as a vocalist on numerous projects as well. Ron has worked with producers such as: Freddie  “Uncle Freddie” Jerkins, Montrel Darrett, Mitchell Jones, and Parkes Stewart.

Ron is the husband to his beautiful wife Devon of 18 years. He is also a devoted and loving father to  three children: Jaslyn, Kaylin, and Ron III.
