Natalie’s Grandview presents Oh Freedom II: The Soul of Freedom, featuring Nikki D & the Browns, along with special guest Debra James Tucker. This engaging program will include some of the early soul classics dealing with freedom struggle, and a narration covering the history of music and civil rights.
Nikki is well known as a “Sacred Steel” player, a musical style, and African-American gospel tradition of using lap steel and pedal steel guitars in church. The Brown Family Singers were formed by their parents, the late Curtis and Ruth Brown in 1973. Their dad encouraged them not to only sing, but also to learn to play musical instruments. They have performed throughout the gospel music circuit and have won awards and recorded several projects, including the 2010 Ohio Gospel Superfest Winners, 2014 Lowell Folk Festival participants, 2014 Toledo Quartet Music Association Grammy Award Winners, and the 2015 B-Made Known Talent Search winners.
The unique sound of vocalist Debra James Tucker is a product of extensive training in jazz, classical, and gospel music. She is the writer/performer of the one-woman show Survival of the Boulevard Singer—winner of an Ohio Arts Council Award for Individual Excellence, has been a visiting instructor at Denison University in the history of African American Gospel Music, and an artist in residence with a number of youth arts organizations.
